Full Name: Eva Marie Cohen
Age: 35
Profession: Defense Attorney for Hadden Rowe Law Firm
Background: Eva grew up most of her life in Brooklyn where her father was a civil defense attorney until his retirement five years ago. Her mother died early on from cancer when she was only seven, so most of her life was spent being raised by her older brother, Jeremy, who was around far more than her father. Despite their apparent lack of much contact, she has always retained a good relationship with her father and frequently turns to him for advice. As for her and Jeremy, the two got very along well until Jeremy married his wife, a student from Paris studying at NYU. The two women never seemed to be able to get along and when Jeremy moved to Washington with her, she lost contact with him for a long time. They recently began talking again, though the conversations are understandably short.
Eva attended NYU, graduating pre-law before continuing on through law school. Her original plan was to become a prosecutor, but that was way laid when a friend of hers was accused of raping his ex-girlfriend. Without money or any potential hope from his parents, she agreed to take the case and won an acquittal. The mannerism of defense work intrigued her and the case won her enough publicity that she was welcome in as an associate to the law firm of Hadden & Rowe when she was 28. She has been with the company now for seven years. Her first two years consisted of civil trials, like her father, however she slowly began filtering into criminal defense. Her attraction to it was the way in which she needed to manipulate other people into believing her story. That kind of work took more psychological maneuvering than legal. Eventually, after two years, she began working entirely in the criminal department of her firm and she has remained there ever since.
In her personal life, Eva has dated a number of men and even been engaged once to a corporate executive. Unfortunately, the engagement failed when she caught him cheating with several of the office’s secretaries. Since then most of her relationships have been brief romances with other defense attorneys, but nothing more. As for her brother, Eva does claim one source of happiness from the marriage and that is her five-year-old niece, Emelie. Bright and bubbly, the little girl stole her aunt’s heart the moment she laid eyes on her. It’s always a treat for Eva whenever Jeremy brings her up for a visit. His wife, Denise, generally stays behind.
Personality: Eva is a very down-to-earth, common sense woman with a wonderful combination of sarcasm and humor that she often uses in the court room to try and sway the jury and her peers. It doesn’t take much to erupt an emotion out of her, but her control is far better when she resides in the court room. People have often commented on how her face is an open book for anyone nearby to read.
Likes/Dislikes: Her dislike list is, regrettably, long, including such jovial things as dance clubs, kilts, race tracks, and other more understandable things like tomatoes, pickles, the Patriot Act, and roses. She is a rather big fan of That 70’s Show and Mash. Also, she likes no one better than her gorgeous golden retriever, Hershey.
Quirks: She doesn’t have many of these, however sometimes, if she’s in the right enough mood, you might find her drinking Napa Valley wine and singing, albeit badly, to Crazy For You, a musical she performed in back in high school.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Eva’s strength often lies in her greatest asset, which she had always deemed her common sense. Approaching every problem with a rational mind, it has proven to be a valuable, if highly underrated tool by many other people. Unfortunately, it has proven to lead to her greatest weakness, which is her arrogance. Her self assurance and occasional lack of foresight has put her in a jam or two and even lost her the occasional case. In her personal life, her great dislike of her sister-in-law has continued to be a rift that seems irreparable with her brother. While they are talking and slowly working on things, she has never truly forgiven that woman for taking away her brother.
